Lecker life drawing
Just before 2023 came to a close, we slipped in a twilight ‘Lecker life drawing’ session with local artist Court Young. Lecker means ‘delicious’ or ‘yummy’ in German, and the name is a nod to the German’s love of both nudity and the human form. It also was named thus to weave in food with life drawing, so the delicious / Lecker offering is made complete by a freshly baked cake + a local drop that is shared throughout the evening of drawing.
Court and partner Ian are the artisan flour millers behind Woodstock Flour, so naturally the cake utilises their freshly milled flour. We feasted on a peach Alabama cake with Zabaione icing that looked like a peachy dreamscape in a field of golden springtime flowers. Truly lecker!
Court introduced the model for the evening, Albury-based artist Sophia Smithwick, who was modelling for the first time. We loved hearing about Sophia’s art practice - she rents a studio at neighbouring Mayday Hills Arts Society.
The format was engaging and snappy. Court and Sophia took us through a series of transitions - 30 second poses, one minute holds, drawing with our non-dominant hand/with our eyes closed, using two markers at once. As we drew, the light changed and the sun set through the big arched windows overlooking the huge Monkey Puzzle trees in the Mayday Hills grounds. We had a break for cake and chats and a top up of delicious Scion wine, and back for one more round, this time with some longer poses, a focus on shading, and some more dramatic poses (with affirming cheers from the participants!.
As the drawing came to a close, with our hands dirty and our faces smudged with charcoal, everyone walked around the room admiring all the different angles and styles and techniques, and showed off their favourites.
A first time for some, a return to the tools for many. Good fun all round.
Yum! Stay tuned for more.
